Meghan Markle didn’t like the strict rules of the ruling class — and hated playing second fiddle to Kate Middleton, a Kensington Palace staffer claims in a new book.
The aide has contributed to biographer Tom Quinn’s new tell-all, “Gilded Youth: An Intimate History of Growing Up in the Royal Family,” which became available today.
The staffer details how Markle, 41, reportedly struggled to adjust to royal life when she married Prince Harry in 2018.
An excerpt of the book published in the Mirror says the Duchess of Sussex was “dazzled by the worldwide fame that being a princess would bring.”
However, she didn’t like being compared to Middleton, 41.
“She hated the constraints and the rules; she hated being a second-rate princess — second to Katherine Middleton, I mean,” the book says.
“Most of all she hated the fact that she had to do what she was told and go where she was told in the endless and to a large extend pointless royal round,” the excerpt continues.

Markle also reportedly felt that she was being handled in a “slightly condescending way” by the Firm due to the fact that she wasn’t a blood royal, despite Middleton being treated in the same manner.
The Duchess of Cambridge, however, “does not have Meghan’s messianic tendencies” and was able to deal with the royal establishment better than the former actress, the aide alleges.
They continue: “The thing to remember is that there is no limit to Meghan’s ambition, and like most fiercely ambitious people, she never thinks, ‘Have I got this wrong? Am I overreacting?’
“But it remains true that she is a lovely person so long as she is never crossed. For a weak boy unsure of himself like Harry, she is perfect because her absolute certainty makes him feel safe,” says the staffer.

The staffer describes Markle as a “very nice, smiley, super-positive person,” but theorizes she struggled with not being able to control her own life anymore after joining the royals.
The staff member also explains that Markle had a hard time being a part of the long-running institution where she had no influence. She was also reportedly upset that her residence would be at Nottingham Cottage on the grounds of Kensington Palace when she thought she’d be living in Windsor Castle.

Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, made a decision to take a step back as senior members of the royal family in January 2020. They subsequently moved to California in March of that year.
Harry, 38, and the mother of two could be making the trek back to the United Kingdom come May 6, when King Charles is officially crowned as monarch during his coronation.

Singer Katy Perry broke down on the set of “American Idol” Sunday after an emotional audition by a mass-shooting survivor.
What started as a normal tryout for 21-year-old Trey Louis took an emotional turn when the Texan wowed the judges with his cover of the 2016 song “Stone” by Whiskey Myers.
Following a standing ovation from all three judges, Louis — who works as a mattress salesperson — revealed that he was a survivor of the 2018 mass shooting at Santa Fe High School in which a gunman killed eight students and two teachers.
“[I] lost a lot of friends,” said the stoic singer, who said the gunman opened fire in the classroom next to his before coming into his art class. “It’s just really been negative, and Santa Fe’s had a bad rap since 2018.”
All three judges appeared affected by his statement, and while Luke Bryan praised Louis’ vocals and big heart, Perry, 38, fell forward onto the table.
“Our country has f – – king failed us!” shouted the crying “Teenage Dream” singer, prompting a carefully composed Louis to acknowledge the statement — simply saying, “Facts” — to which Perry responded, “This is not OK.”

Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee met on New Year's Eve of 1994, and they tied the knot just four days later.
Last year's Hulu series Pam & Tommy followed the whirlwind relationship between the Baywatch star and Mötley Crüe drummer in the 1990s, including their infamous sex tape scandal during their three-year marriage.
The show received backlash from Pamela, who was never asked permission to create it, nor was consulted in the making of it, per PEOPLE.
Now, she's setting the record straight in Pamela, A Love Story, her new Netflix documentary, and her new memoir, Love, Pamela, which both dropped on Jan. 31. The doc's trailer shows interviews with Pamela in addition to her two sons she had with Tommy: Brandon Thomas Lee, 26, and Dylan Jagger Lee, 25
These two were never really in the spotlight growing up, considering how Pamela always prioritized their privacy. But now that they're working on their own projects, the boys are making a name for themselves.
Here's everything to know about Brandon Thomas And Dylan Jagger Lee.
Brandon works as an actor and reality TV star.
He acted in the films Sierra Burgess is a Loser (2017), Blackjack: The Jackie Ryan Story (2020), and Cosmic Sin (2021), and the television show Tales (2019), per IMDb. In 2019, Brandon also starred in the revival of The Hills and later returned for Season 2 of The Hills: New Beginnings, per ET Canada.
He previously told Interview in 2017 that he wanted to make a name for himself separate from his parents.
"I want to show people what I 'm truly like," he said. "There are a lot of misconceptions about the way we were raised—that we're spoiled, or that we were given everything. But our friends can back this up: Dylan and I haven't taken a dollar from our parents since we were in high school."
Brandon also launched his own clothing fashion collaboration line.
Back in November 2021, he dropped the retro Golf-inspired line called Swingers Club, with Local Authority.
"Golf is a huge part of my life and so is fashion," Brandon wrote on Instagram, via PEOPLE. "Up until this point it's been a dream of mine to create a brand that reflects my sense of style combined with a lifestyle I love and enjoy. I can't wait to show you what's coming next!"
Dylan is a musician.
Dylan decided to follow in both his mother's and father's footsteps. He's a model and musician, but rather than rock music, he's actually big into EDM. He was one half of Midnight Kids, which now only consists of his former group member, Kyle Girard.
Following his unexpected exit in January 2021, he set off to create a new sound and joined a duo called Motel 7, per PEOPLE. Seeing as their IG hasn't posted since March 2022, it's unclear whether the duo is still making music.
He's also done lots of modeling, beginning his career when he walked in the Saint Laurent 2016 show, per EWG Management, who also wrote that he's worked with Armani Exchange, Coach, Dolce & Gabbana, Hugo Boss, Acne Studios, and more.
They didn't know their parents were famous while they were growing up.
While chatting with Interview in 2017, Brandon revealed even though he did grow up in the spotlight, his parents did their best to give them a normal childhood. They were raised in Malibu, but actually went to boarding school on Vancouver Island, the outlet wrote.
"Life just happens at such an accelerated pace," Brandon told the outlet about growing up in L.A. "Everything around you is happening faster. People are losing their virginity five years younger than everywhere else in America. People are getting involved in drugs at a much younger age."
Brandon continued: "I remember one day asking my mom, 'Hey, why does everybody take photos of us?' And she said, 'Oh, they do that to everybody.'"
And although they have crazy famous parents, they've worked for everything they have. "We’ve been working our a**** off to buy a house, buy a car, and pay for music equipment and acting lessons. It feels better to do it ourselves," Brandon told Interview.
They're still close to their parents.
Despite their parents being divorced, the family occasionally reunites to spend time together. Both of Pamela's sons have accompanied her to red carpet events.
One of their most recent get-togethers was in November of 2021, where Pamela and Tommy reunited to celebrate Swingers Club at The Webster Los Angeles.
Pamela's two sons showed up to her Broadway debut in April 2022 when she played Roxie Hart in Chicago, per PEOPLE. They were also by her side during the premiere of Pamela, A Love Story.
Pamela has said that their fam is a "good team," during her 2023 PEOPLE cover story, due to her sons' different personalities. "Dylan is more introspective and more Zen," she continued.
"Brandon and Dylan are true miracles, considering their gene pool," she wrote in her memoir, via PEOPLE. "They have been through so much, yet they are not full of holes."
Her sons have been supportive after her recent divorce.
After Pamela made headlines when she announced from her husband of one year Dan Hayhurst in January 2022, she was spotted spending quality time with Dylan, who joined her for dinner at Nobu in Malibu less than two weeks later, per The Daily Mail.

As we wait for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to announce its class of 2023, let's have a little fun debating the acts on the ballot.
Catch up fast: The 14 nominees were announced Feb. 1.
- A voting pool of more than 1,000 music historians, journalists and previous inductees will select five to seven inductees, to be announced in May.
💭 My thought bubble: I ranked the nominees from most to least deserving based on their resumes and impact.
- Joy Division's post-punk sound inspired a countless number of moody alternative-rock acts, while New Order redefined electronic music for future generations.
- One of country music's most iconic figures and a pioneer of the 1970s outlaw movement that changed Southern music.
3. Kate Bush
- Critically acclaimed singer-songwriter with a progressive pop style that influenced numerous female (and male) artists.
- A massive star of the 1980s and 1990s with one of the great voices in popular music history.
- The definitive rock band of the 21st century whose merger of blues and protopunk defined the genre.
- Unique artist who helped change the landscape of hip-hop and pop music during the late 1990s/early 2000s.
7. Iron Maiden
- One of the most influential heavy metal bands of all-time; rode the new wave of British heavy metal to global success in the 1980s.
8. Cyndi Lauper
- One of the biggest pop-culture icons of the 1980s who pushed pop feminism and punk characteristics into the mainstream.
9. Warren Zevon
- Not the biggest name on the ballot, but a smart songwriter who influenced Hall of Famers like R.E.M., Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty.
- One of the most eclectic and politically charged acts of the 1990s, yet released only three albums of original material.
11. Soundgarden
- On the Mount Rushmore of 1990s grunge bands, but not quite impactful as previous inductees like Nirvana and Pearl Jam.
- One of the most artistic rap acts of the 1990s; lacks the crossover success of other recent hip-hop inductees.
13. The Spinners
- Often overlooked R&B group with tremendous longevity and a few big hits, but nothing truly game-changing.
14. Sheryl Crow
- Beloved roots rocker with major success in the 1990s. Still, feels like she unfairly leaped over more deserving artists like Melissa Etheridge and Alanis Morissette.

One Direction were famous for not dancing. Sure, loyal Directioners were welcome to tear it up at their shows, but the fellas were not going to do a number for your amusement. But Niall Horan was happy to toss that edict aside, for one night anyway, when he played a choreo-happy pirate on The Late Late Show on Tuesday night (Feb. 28).
The singer, who has a long and fruitful friendship with soon-to-depart host James Corden, was game to play along in a bit in which a gaggle of show tunes-loving high seas marauders tortured their captive with strangely elaborate dance numbers. Wearing a traditional tricorn hat, ruffled white shirt, purple vest and scraggly beard, Horan warned the captured British soldier that he was lucky to be alive.

“This ship, and it’s booty is all ours!” he informed the British naval officer, warning that the person he should really be afraid of is their leader, the dreaded Dreadbeard. We know his name because Horan and Corden sang a whole song about it. “I bet you’ve heard a million tales that tell you who I am,” Corden crooned as a fife and drum track bubbled up out of nowhere and their fellow pirates broke out into a jig as the ship inexplicably lit up in neon lights.
“His name has traveled everywhere from England to Japan,” Horan growled, while their prisoner said the tune did answer his question about who was in charge, but in turn elicited way more questions. “Like what the hell was that?” he asked. “That whole song and dance routine? What was that for?”
“What for?” Horan snarled, barely containing his laughter. “To strike fear into your heart and spread the terrifying tale of Captain Dreadbeard.” Suffice it to say it did not do that and the captive seriously asked if this happened every time they boarded a ship.
Yes, in fact, it seems it does. Which, of course, elicited yet another elaborate number featuring their fellow pirates doing a delicate ribbon dance as Horan slipped into a seaweed-covered veil to portray a delicate siren of the deep while he and Corden shared a tender duet.
“I’m so confused right now, a mermaid broke your heart?” their hostage asked. “And whose idea were the ribbons?… And also, I’ve never met pirates before but I feel like there should be slightly less musical theater involved.” Turns out that was all Niall: he thought the ribbons added a “pop of color.”
The incessant questions sparked a mutiny among the crew, who then grumbled about the amount of high seas rehearsal they have to endure every day, along with gripes about who gets the leads in their marauder musicals. The bit ended with Horan and Corden doing an “All That Jazz”-style routine, complete with a tap dance break and Niall’s quick change into a glittery purple waistcoat for a bit-ending Rockettes high kick routine.
Horan’s forthcoming third solo album, The Show, is due out on June 9.

The Beach Boys rocketed to fame in the ’60s with their fun, breezy songs about the California lifestyle. Their albums were filled with tracks about sun, surfing, and girls. Surprisingly, only four of the group’s singles rose to No. 1 on the Billboard charts.
The Beach Boys were hugely popular in the ’60s, competing with the Beatles and Rolling Stones
The band’s original lineup consisted of brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and a friend named Al Jardine. Brian was the creative mastermind behind the Beach Boys’ songs, while dad Murry Wilson served as the band’s manager.
At the time, the Beach Boys were noted as one of the few American rock groups that not only performed their songs but wrote them, too. They were also one of the few American groups to continue their success after the British Invasion brought the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and countless other UK acts to the US.
The Beach Boys had just four No. 1 hits
Even though the Beach Boys have sold over 100 million records worldwide, the band has just four No.1 singles to their name. According to Billboard, the first one came in 1964, with “I Get Around” from their album All Summer Long.
“I Get Around” was No. 1 for two weeks and remained on the charts for 15 total weeks. The single was also certified Gold by RIAA and certified Silver by BPI.

How to Watch ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3
Pedro Pascal’s other blockbuster series returns on Disney+.
Lizzy Caplan is not going to be ignored.
The “Mean Girls” and “Party Down” alum is dismantling the facade of suburban marital bliss one TV series at a time, starting with Hulu’s dark satire “Fleishman Is in Trouble” and culminating in the highly anticipated Paramount+ reboot of “Fatal Attraction.”
More from IndieWire
Caplan stars as Alex, a career-focused woman who begins an affair with married businessman Dan, played by Joshua Jackson. Alex’s mental state slowly unravels as she claws her way deeper into Dan’s life. Glenn Close and Michael Douglas originally starred in the 1987 film, helmed by Adrian Lyne.
However, the Paramount+ series led by showrunner, writer, and executive producer Alexandra Cunningham (“Dirty John”) will have a different take on the psychosexual affair.
“The screenwriter of the film James Dearden said, to him the character of Alex Forrest is not a study in madness, but rather a sad, tragic, lonely woman under pressure from a really hard job,” Cunningham told Deadline. “As a frequently sad, not at all tragic, and not as lonely as I wish I was but under pressure from a really hard job, I wanted us to go in a slightly different direction. This reimagining of ‘Fatal Attraction’ shares a lot with the iconic original film, but it also is about entitlement and midlife crisis and how some of the sausage gets made in our broken justice system, as well as Cluster B personality disorders, isolation, of fathers and daughters, and murder.”
Cunningham continued, “It’s about how some people just can’t take a win. It’s about self-image and what we’ll do to protect it and also what happens when someone doesn’t have one. And if we’ve done our job, which these actors and their colleagues definitely did, they think that your sympathies will shift more than once.”
Lead star Caplan previously reflected on the film’s audiences vilifying Alex from a “1980s perspective — this amazing guy makes one mistake and now this horrible woman is trying to ruin his life.”
Caplan added, “It really shows how far we have come. I don’t think that we’ve arrived at any finish line in terms of everything that’s happened with #MeToo and what that set in motion,. But the idea that you could never make the 1980s version of this now, shows some degree of progress. I think when they’re at their best, that’s what the reboot would do and hopefully our show does that.”
The ensemble cast is rounded out by Amanda Peet who plays Dan’s wife Beth, Alyssa Jirrels as Dan’s mother Ellen, Toby Huss as Mike Gerard, Reno Wilson as Detective Earl Booker, and Brian Goodman as Arthur Tomlinson.
Screenwriter Kevin J. Hynes, Darryl Frank, and Justin Falvey executive produce for Amblin Television. Silver Tree directs five episodes of the series and also executive produces.
“Fatal Attraction” premieres April 30 on Paramount+.
